Revenue during the quarter dropped 7.45 percent to $454.54 million from $491.14 million in the previous year period. Gross margin for the quarter expanded 34 basis points over the previous year period to 14.33 percent. Total expenses were 91.50 percent of quarterly revenues, down from 92.12 percent for the same period last year. This has led to an improvement of 63 basis points in operating margin to 8.50 percent.

Operating income for the quarter was $38.65 million, compared with $38.68 million in the previous year period.

However, the adjusted EBITDA for the quarter stood at $48.51 million compared with $57.99 million in the prior year period. At the same time, adjusted EBITDA margin contracted 114 basis points in the quarter to 10.67 percent from 11.81 percent in the last year period.

Pieter Sikkel, chief executive officer and president, said "Our results for the nine months ended December 31, 2016 include increased full service volumes and prior crop inventory sales. Improved performance throughout much of our global operations offset a considerable portion of the impact created by adverse El Niño weather, the stronger U.S. dollar and product mix that more heavily favored byproducts this year. Unfortunately, our operations in Brazil, the U.S., and Tanzania were more heavily affected by these factors and overshadowed operations with improvement."

For financial year 2017, Alliance One International, Inc projects revenue to be in the range of $1,790 million to $1,840 million.
